The Happy Bridge

- The Bridge to a Happier Life -

OUR PUPILS

Iluh started at Jembatan Senang in early 2011 together with her sister Kadek. At the time, she was just 17 and Kadek 14. The two sisters were inseparable until Kadek died suddenly in April 2020. For Iluh and her family a heavy blow and a great loss. Iluh is late in her development, has poor eyesight and also has some physicall deficits. She is a sweet girl and she always participates very enthusiastically in the lessons and her reactions make you happy yourself.

Gede B. has been a pupil at Jembatan Senang since the summer of 2020 when he was 6. Gede has Down syndrome and is a cheerful, funny boy who enjoys interacting with the people around him. His playful and mischievous character often brings smiles to those
around him.
Developing his speech is still a gradual process. Gede knows many words, but pronouncing them clearly remains chalenging. He is not yet using many complete sentences. On Saturdays he receives support from our speech therapist, who works with him to further develop his communication skills.

When Kadek started at JS in the winter of 2019, he was 7 years old. Kadek finds everything around him interesting and is therefore very easily distracted. It is extremely difficult to keep him on track or to get him to perform tasks. He is a sweet cheerfull boy but he can sometimes run away. His home situation is difficult. Without a mother and with a hard working father he gets little attention.

Shopan came to us on the last day of 2015 as a 13-year-old boy. Shopan has a fairly severe form of autism and it is sometimes difficult to get in touch with him. He likes music and singing, but sometimes also sings when, for example, the teachers do story telling. He can make the most fantastic structures with blocks that would fall over if anyone else would make them, but he can then focus so that everything remains upright. Every now and then all the stimuli of the group becomes too much for him and then he is given the space to be on his own in another part of our classroom.

Kadek Aditya started at our school in august 2024 when he was 5 years old. Kadek is a lovely, funny and enthousiastic little boy. Kadek can´t speak en he can be very actif. At our school he gets speech therapy and by going to our school we try to improve his social behaviour.

Made started at Jembatan Senang in the fall of 2014 as a 13-year-old. She had seen her sisters go to school and wanted to go to school herself, but because of her Down syndrome she could not go to a regular school. She is a smart girl with a mind of her own and she is not shy to speak out and she is very enthusiastic about everything.

Putu A.  was 8 when she started at JS in the summer of 2018. It is a quiet girl who will first observate a new situation before participating. She is mentally behind in her development and finds it difficult to understand things, but she likes to participate in the lessons. She swims as one of the best and likes to show off that she dares to dive and swim under water. Jembatan Senang is her first school and she will learn a lot from us.

Putu W. entered Jembatan senang as a 5-year-old in the spring of 2018. Putu has autism and is also continuously weak in his arms and legs. It is difficult for him to stand or walk around the schoolyard. It is also difficult for him to follow the lessons because it is an effort for him to sit upright. He needs a teacher close to him all the time. Thanks to the use of medication, this now seems to be going a little better and he is also able to participate more actively in the various school activities.

Manda was 10 years old when het started at Jembatan senang is september 2023. Manda is Hyperactif and its hard for him to focus on what he is doing. He is very enthusiastic, funny, enjoying all the activities en is able to read and write a little. Going to school is new for him and we´ll see which leavel he can reach when he is better used to the situation.

Iluh Serly started at our school being 8 years old in august 2024. Serly can`t hear but doesn´t have any other mental disorders. For her its the first time going to school. One of our teachers has learned sign language and with that we hope to prepare Serly to go to a school for children with special needs here in Karangasem were there are a lot of deaf pupils. She will have to stay there overnight in the ashrama because she lives very remote from the school and its imposible for the parents to pick her up on a daily base. We hope we will succeed.

Since April 2026 we have welcomed a new student to Jembatan Senang: Kadek Oka Suardana. Kadek, born in October 2014, is a cousin of Manda and lives quite a distance from Jembatan Senang. Nevertheless his family has chosen to have him receive education and guidance here. According to his family his development proceeded normally up to and including kindergarten. After that Kadek regularly suffered high fever attacks accompanied by seizures, after which his development lagged behind that of his peers. In addition he experienced a profound loss: He was present when his mother drowned in a river. Since then, Kadek has been lovingly cared for by his aunts.
Kadek is friendly, shy but enthusiastic boy. We hope that he feels safe and welcome at Jembatan Senang so that he can build more self confidence step by step and continue to develop his own pace.

Putu Artha joined Jembatan Senang in August 2025. He was born in May 2015. Putu has experienced communication difficulties from an early age. Although he rarely speaks, but we know he is able to do so. Singing, however comes naturally to him, and muscic seems to be an important way for him to express himself.
Putu often stays
in his own world, yet there are beautiful moments when he steps out of it with a bright smile and briefly connects with the people around him. These moments reveal the warmth and sinsitivity within him. We hope that spending time with the other children at Jembatan Senang will gradually help widen his world and give him opportunities to build connections and learn, in his own way and at his own pace, how to interact with others.
